What is gas mask
Gas mask
A gas mask is a piece of personal protective equipment used to protect the wearer from inhaling airborne pollutants and toxic gases. The mask forms a sealed cover over the nose and mouth, but may also cover the eyes and other vulnerable soft tissues of the face.
A gas mask is a personal protective device that shields the face and lungs from hazardous ai
rborne substances by using filters to purify the air you breathe. Key recommendations include the for industrial tasks and the for high-level CBRN defense.
Types of Gas Masks5
There are two primary types of respiratory protective devices based on their operation: air-purifying respirators (APRs) and atmosphere-supplying respirators
atmosphere-supplying respirators (ASRs).
Air-Purifying Respirators (APRs) These masks, including most common gas masks, filter contaminants from the surrounding air but do not supply oxygen. They should not be used in environments with low oxygen levels (below 17%) or unknown hazards.
Atmosphere-Supplying Respirators (ASRs) These systems provide clean air from an external source, such as an air line or an oxygen tank (like a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus or SCBA used by firefighters). They offer the highest level of protection and can be used in immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH)

Gas mask
A gas mask is a breathing device designed to protect the wearer from dangerous airborne substances. Typically, a gas mask has a tight-fitting facepiece with filters, transparent eyepieces, and an exhalation valve. Straps hold it to the face, and it can be used with a protective hood. The mask filters contaminants from the air the wearer inhales. Filters can be replaced, but they don't add oxygen; some masks connect to a separate oxygen tank via a hose.
Most filters have fiber screens to remove fine solid particles and chemical compounds like charcoal to capture or chemically alter poisonous gases. Charcoal can absorb a significant volume of poisonous gases.
Armed forces worldwide commonly use gas masks. While filters can neutralize almost any specific toxic substance, one mask cannot protect against all toxins. Military gas masks are designed to counteract chemicals most likely used in wartime. Gas masks only work against chemical-warfare agents dispersed as true gases and harmful when inhaled. Agents like mustard gas, which are dispersed as liquids and attack through the skin, require special protective clothing in addition to gas masks.
