OZONE GAS DETAILS
Ozone gas \(O_3}is a highly reactive molecule of three oxygen atoms, crucial in the atmosphere as the protective "ozone layer" in the stratosphere, shielding Earth from harmful UV rays, but a harmful air pollutant at ground level (tropospheric ozone), causing respiratory problems and contributing to smog and greenhouse warming. "Good" stratospheric ozone is natural, while "bad" ground-level ozone forms from reactions between pollutants, sunlight, and heat, damaging lung tissue and organic materials.
Stratospheric Ozone ("Good" Ozone)- Location: The "ozone layer," 10-30 miles above Earth.
- Function: Absorbs most of the sun's damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation, protecting life.
- Formation: Naturally formed from oxygen () by solar UV light.
Tropospheric Ozone ("Bad" Ozone)
Location: Near the ground in the lower atmosphere (troposphere).

Formation: Man-made reactions between vehicle/industrial emissions, sunlight, and heat.

- Physical State: Colorless gas, forms a dark blue liquid or violet-black solid at very low temperatures, and can be explosive when concentrated.
Uses of Ozone – O3
Ozone used at water treatment plants without filtration systems.
Ozone may also be formed by commonly used equipment such as photocopiers, laser printers, and other electrical devices.
In medicine, by limiting the effects of bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast, and protozoa, ozone therapy is used to disinfect and treat diseases.
Several ozone-depleting compounds possess properties that make them good refrigerants that is, they can efficiently transfer
heat from one location to another.
